Instructions

    • 1

      Measure pony wall dimensions.

    • 2

Cut the 2-by-4s to the correct length, per the dimensions, before framing the wall. The center studs need to be the same length, depending on the height of the wall.

    • 3

Construct the initial frame by putting the 2-by-4s together. Depending how long the wall is going to be, place up to five 2-by-4 boards vertically between two longer horizontal boards. Space out the width between each stud.

    • 4

Use framing nails to attach the boards together. Place the frame against a wall or some other backstop when nailing into the studs.

    • 5

Attach the pony wall to the existing wall using the same framing nails. Find a stud in the existing wall. The pony wall will need to the secured to a stud for the wall to remain upright.

    • 6

Cover the wall with drywall on the sides as well as the top. Secure the drywall by hammering finishing nails into the studs. Once drywall has been attached, it can be textured or painted.

Tips & Warnings

  • A nail gun will help speed up wall framing. Taping and mudding the drywall may be necessary to seal any seams in the drywall. Molding can be added to the wall to give it a finished look. Purchase pieces of 2-by-4 lumber at a home improvement store such as Lowe's or Home Depot. You will need enough lumber for two horizontal pieces and up to five vertical pieces to frame the pony wall.

  • The existing wall will need to be patched and repaired if the pony wall is removed.
