There are three different types of door knobs: dummy knobs, knobs with keys or latch knobs. Latch knobs have the benefit of being able to be locked from the inside, unlike dummy knobs, but without having to use a key. Replacing one of the first two types with the latch kind is easy.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Philips and flat head screwdriver
  • Latch door knob
  1. Step 1

Take off the old door knob by unscrewing the screws on the inside of the door. If you do not see any screws you will need to use a flat head screwdriver to pop off the metal tab covering the screws, and then unscrew them.

  2. Step 2

Pull the two sides of the knob out from the door.

  3. Step 3

Pop the middle part of the knob out of the hole. This is the locking mechanism. It may even come out with the door knob when you remove it in Step 2.

  4. Step 4

Take the new locking mechanism from your door latch and place it into the door knob hole.

  5. Step 5

Put both sides of the door latch in the hole, making sure to keep the side with the push button on the inside. Put the two screws in the holes and screw them in to hold the door latch in place.
