The chances of being struck by lightning is 1 in 3000. On average, there are more than 20 million lightning strikes in the United States. More than 50 people die each year from lightning strikes. Learn how you can take careful measures and precautions to avoid getting struck by lightning!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

You are caught in a large storm and lightning bolts are flashing everywhere. Would you know what to do to avoid getting struck by lightning? The first thing you want to do is to take shelter if you are outside. The best place for refuge is in a car with the windows closed.

  2. Step 2

Make sure that you are away from trees as well as picnic shelters. You also want to avoid water, high grounds, metal objects and large, open areas.

  3. Step 3

When you are caught in a storm with lightning all around, you obviously want to avoid using your cell phone and any electronics. If you are at home, make sure to unplug all electronics.

  4. Step 4

It also helps to install lightning rods in your house. Research has proven that blunt lightning rods are more effective than the sharper lightning rods.

  5. Step 5

If lightning should occur near you, the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to squat your heels close to the ground and place your head between your knees, and your hands over your ears. Minimizing your contact with the ground will help you significantly.
