Being a dog owner means you need to know everything, including prevention of dog hot spots. These little areas of skin that start by an itch, perhaps, and end up a huge spot that hurts your dog. What causes a hot spot varies from dog to dog, but what doesn't vary is how quickly it can rage out of control, leaving your dog uncomfortable. Here's how to prevent dog hot spots.

1. Watch your dog to make sure the dog doesn't chew or scratch once place consistently to tear the skin or make an area infected. This is how a hot spot starts.

2. Take your dog to the veterinarian if you can't get your dog to stop itching or scratching as that is the initial signs of hot spot trouble.

3. Make sure your dog doesn't have fleas. This is what causes the majority of hot spots. The skin becomes inflamed, the dog scratches and the next thing you know a hot spot is present. Flies and ants can also be an issue if your dog has sensitive skin.

4. Minimize what your dog might be allergic to. Humans aren't the only ones who have allergies. A hot spot could develop when the skin is irritated by an allergic reaction to dust, pollen or other abnormal stuff in the air. If your dog develops more than one hot spot quickly, look to see what has changed in your dogs immediate environment to see why the skin is irritated.
