The Sugar Busters Diet helps people with insulin resistance, or people who gain weight easily on high-sugar, high-carbohydrate diets lose weight successfully. It's also been recommended for people with health issues like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Unfortunately, the recommendations usually involve a lot of meat. You can do the Sugar Busters as a vegetarian with a few simple modifications.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Eliminate sugary or starchy foods. The regular Sugar Busters Diet requires you to remove high carbohydrate foods, like white sugar, white flour, potatoes and other root vegetables, as well as highly processed snacks. The same is true for those doing the Sugar Busters Diet as a vegetarian.

  2. Step 2

Chose complex carbohydrates that have a log glycemic index rating. These are likely foods you've already been eating, like vegetables and whole gains, but while doing the Sugar Busters Diet as a vegetarian, you need to make sure to eat limited quantities of these foods, making them no more than around 30% of your daily caloric intake.

  3. Step 3

Choose high quality proteins. When doing the Sugar Busters Diet as a vegetarian, it is essential to watch your protein intake. Eat liberally of foods like tofu, tempeh and low carbohydrate meat substitutes. You can also eat beans and nuts in limited quantities.

  4. Step 4

Don't skimp on the fat. When doing the Sugar Busters Diet as a vegetarian, you will be getting less fat, as you won't be consuming animals. Add unsaturated, healthy fats like olive oil to your diet. The Sugar Buster's Diet encourages the use of healthy fats and that is especially true for those doing the Sugar Busters Diet as a vegetarian.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to read the labels on all the food you buy. It is not safe to assume a food doesn't have added sugar.
