Things You'll Need:

  • kitchen appliances
  • meal ideas
  1. Step 1

Recent research has found that certain kitchen appliances are more energy-efficient than others. The best picks for saving electricity are the crock-pot, the microwave and the toaster oven. These put out less electricity than their major appliance counterparts. Try using them to cook at least one meal a week to cut back on energy use.

  2. Step 2

Cover your food if the recipe will allow. This traps heat into a pan and food will cook faster, enabling you to shut off the stove sooner. Your electricity budget will thank you.

  3. Step 3

The oven often vents through a burner on the stove. That means that if you use that burner while something is cooking in the oven, you can keep the burner on a much lower temperature since you're already getting heat coming up from the oven. Water on this burner will boil on medium heat instead of just on high when something is in the oven. Put your hand a few inches over each burner to determine which one is being heated by the hot oven and use that one more.

  4. Step 4

When your food is almost done, turn off the stove or oven and let the food sit there a few minutes until it is done. The stove remains hot even after it's off, and you can consider that heat to be free electricity. Just beware that all food is still cooked properly; no short-cuts on meat!

Tips & Warnings
  • Grilling over a campfire is a fun and creative way to save electricity!
  • On the internet, you can find recipes to cook on the engine of your car while you travel long distances... and yes, I'm serious.
  • Always test food for proper doneness. Be sure that meat and fish are the correct color and temperature before serving.
