Participate in a Relay for Life Luminaria Ceremony

The American Cancer Society sponsors Relay for Life events each year to honor and remember those who have had cancer. The Luminaria ceremony is held in the darkness after a lap around a track in memory of someone lost to cancer. Any person can participate in the ceremony.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the American Cancer Society website for the dates of "Relay for Life" events in your community. If you are a cancer survivor, register early as there are other meaningful events at the relay to honor cancer survivors.

    • 2

Purchase and decorate a luminaria bag for $10 in honor or memory of a loved one with cancer. The bags are placed around the track and lit just prior to the ceremony.

    • 3

Attend the Relay for Life event as a spectator or a participant. The Luminaria Ceremony is held in the dark so the only lights in the area come from the bags lining the track. The survivors are invited to lead everyone on a quiet lap around the track while inspirational music is played.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring a butane lighter just in case the organizers don't have them available.
