When you use another photographer's work, it is not only proper etiquette but also your legal duty to request photo permission.

Photographs are protected by copyright laws, just like other works such as books.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Photograph you want to use
  • Letter requesting photo permission
  1. Step 1

Find out who owns the copyright to the photo you want to use. If you come across a photograph online and want to simply copy it and save it to your computer to use now or later, think again. Someone took that photo and that person owns the rights to it.

  2. Step 2

Find the contact information on the website where the photo is located. Then email the contact person to request permission to use the photo or photos.

Include the following information in your photo permission request:

    - what photographs you want to use (be clear which photos you are interested in using)
    - where (what publication or website) you want to use the photos
    - the purpose for using the photos, which may allow you to use the photos for free, such as linking to their website in exchange for using their photo

  3. Step 3

Ask permission. Be sure to include the words 'I would like permission to use your photograph' somewhere in your email letter to the photographer.

  4. Step 4

Wait to hear from the website owner or photographer before using the photographs you're interested in. If you don't have permission, don't use it.

  5. Step 5
Request photo permission before using photos.

When you hear back, honor the photographer's answer. If they allow you to use the photos for free, feel fortunate. Remember, they own the rights and do not have to do this. If they ask for a fee for you to use the photos, decide then if you are willing and able to pay the fee.

  6. Step 6

If you do receive photo permission, whether you pay to use the photo or not, keep a copy of the email or whatever written permission you receive. Print a copy or back up your computer files to save the permission letter indefinitely.

  7. Step 7

When using anyone's photos, including your own, always give photo credit.

on 7/17/2009 It's very important to ask for permission for photos unless they're posted at a free site. Great information here. Thanks.
