Bakeware Bulletin Board

Bulletin boards can be expensive to buy, but you can make one at home easily. If you like the no-fuss look of a magnetic bulletin board and if budget is a concern, make a bakeware bulletin board and save your hard earned money for something else.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • old steel cookie sheet or other steel bakeware
  • 8 to 10 lb pull force hobby magnets
  • empty food cans
  • one magnetic hook
  • power drill & 1/4" drill bit with two screws (optional)
  • level (optional)
  • ratchet screwdriver (optional)
  1. Step 1

To make a bakeware bulletin board, gather all the materials from the list. Pick a variety of can sizes to make your bulletin board as useful as possible.

Tear off the paper labels from the empty food cans and scrape off any remaining glue residue. Rinse and dry cans well.

  2. Step 2

You will need to purchase hobby magnets with an 8 to 10 lb pull force which you can get at a local hobby or crafts shop or look for them online at sites like Ebay. While you're out, pick up a magnetic hook or two at the discount or home improvement store. Check the packaging before purchase which will tell you the weight limit per hook.

Attach one magnet to the center of each of the clean empty food cans. Be careful while handling the magnets as the pull is very strong and people have gotten fingers pinched working with these.

  3. Step 3

Use any old piece of stainless steel bakeware for the bulletin board. Look for an old cookie sheet at home first or you can substitute a round pie pan or something similar. If you have to shop, try to buy a used item first and remember to take along a magnet to try out on any bakeware you may find.

  4. Step 4

Decide where the bakeware message board will be located. You can either lean it against the wall on a desktop, for example, or you could hang it on the wall. To hang on wall, mark and drill two 1/4" holes at opposite sides of the cookie sheet. Attach with screws to the wall using a level to ensure it's hanging straight.

Arrange cans and hooks on the bakeware bulletin board to suit your needs. You can put paperclips, small change, etc. in the empty tuna can. Hang your keys on the magnetic hook and use the taller cans to store hobby brushes, pens and maybe a colorful silk flower.

Tips & Warnings
  • Magnets are strong and should always be handled by an adult with care. Strong magnets can be harmful to persons with pacemakers and should be kept away from children as they are a choking hazard and are very harmful if swallowed.
  • Keep magnets away from any type of electronics like a tv, computer, for example, or even credit and debit cards as the strong magnetic field can screw up these items.

on 5/17/2009 Cute idea! I used cookie sheets as magnet displays at the last craft fair I did, but I never really thought of turning them into a bulletin board.
