Step 1
Checking Qualifications
Anyone can call themselves a professional writer and many individuals who offer professional writing services have no formal training or qualifications. They are, for all intents and purposes, people who simple call themselves writers. Your first consideration you when opting to outsource your web content is what qualifications your chosen writer actually has.
Most skilled writers have a college/university background in one of these disciplines; English, Journalism, Communication, or Media. While some writers have academic backgrounds in other areas, if you're looking for a specialist, look for a writer who can offer evidence of a degree in one of the above fields. -
Step 2
Experience
Having established your writer has formal qualifications, the next thing to consider is their level of experience and what type of experience they have. Writing web content is as much a matter of diligent research as it is about skilled writing. If the writer you plan to work with has an extensive background in creative writing, lets say poetry or fictional work, writing a factual piece of web copy is unlikely to be their forte.
Professional writers are not all equal, they have strengths and weaknesses like any other professional. If your niche is in the area of fictional work, by all means, look for a creative writer, but if your niche is fact based, a background in journalism would be far more useful. -
Step 3
Can you work with them?
An important thing to remember is that just like any employee, you need to be able to get along with a hired writer. In order to ensure the copy they produce is right for your website, regular communication between web owner and writer is necessary. Unless your chosen writer is friendly, approachable and flexible, you should look elsewhere. -
Step 4
Ask for testimonials or samples of existing work. An experienced professional writer should be happy to provide this. Evidence of satisfied existing clients is a good indication that their work is worth paying for.
Reading samples of their work is also a good way of gauging if their writing style will work on your site or blog.
