How to Get More Power From a Chevy 350 Engine
Getting more power out of a small block Chevy increases the value of the engine and the vehicle. Small block Chevy performance parts and upgrades are very popular--and less expensive when compared to Ford or Chrysler products. The 350 engine has been a favorite of race fans since the 1960s, and continues to be a strong performer today.

Install a performance camshaft. Camshafts come in all sorts of sizes, from mild to wild. For street conditions, implement a camshaft that will punch up the lower end of the RPM range a bit. This will also come in handy when towing, because that low-end grunt is what gets heavy loads moving in a hurry. For race applications, get a camshaft that is effective in the mid to upper RPM range, where the motor will be at high speeds. Consult the manufacturer for specs and power increases of each camshaft to decide which is best for you and your vehicle.

Bolt on an aftermarket intake manifold and carburetor. Arguably, nothing is more effective at quick power gains than a performance intake and carburetor setup. The most popular brands on the market are Holley and Edelbrock, but many others exist. An aftermarket intake manifold will have bigger plenums (runners that the fuel travels through) and a smoother surface inside for better fuel delivery. This is complimented by an aftermarket carburetor which will deliver smoother, punchier power. There are factors to consider, such as whether you want to retain a choke and whether the carburetor should have vacuum or mechanical secondary barrels. Local laws may prohibit the use of some fuel delivery systems for street driven vehicles, so check the ordinances where you live before installation.

Install headers. Factory exhaust manifolds leave a lot to be desired when it comes to size and flow. A more powerful engine can definitely use a bigger size exhaust tubing to help the engine breathe easier, and headers are a way to do that. They bolt onto the heads and connect to the normal exhaust, but are much less restrictive and normally make the vehicle louder, as well. Hooker, Doug Thorley and Hedman all make wonderful headers for the small block Chevy, but there are many other manufacturers in the market. Once again, check local ordinances to ensure the installation is legal, especially on vehicles that require smog tests.
