How to Remove Double-Sided Tape Adhesive From Timber

Adhesive tape is a high-viscosity liquid with significant adhesion properties and good cohesion. These physical properties make it the near-perfect tool for countless applications (hanging prints, plants and mirrors). Unfortunately, the characteristics we love about adhesive tape---its strength, durability and elasticity---become a curse, as it leaves behind a residue that can be unsightly and stubborn. Naphtha-based lighter fluid, thankfully, is a mixture of light hydrocarbons that specifically attack the residue's cohesion, breaking apart the substance's ability to hold itself together, thereby making it easy to remove.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Liquid Lighter Fluid (Naphtha-based)
  • Cloth
  • Glass cleaner
  1. Step 1

Treat the offending area with the lighter fluid. Test a small area first to check whether it discolors the timber. Use enough to saturate the residue.

  2. Step 2

Wait five minutes, then gently rub the residue with a dry cloth. All traces of the substance should easily be wiped away. For especially stubborn tape adhesive, reapply the lighter fluid, and wait an additional five minutes.

  3. Step 3

Use a gentle cleaning agent, such as glass cleaner, to remove any remaining lighter fluid or adhesive residue.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lighter fluid has a strong odor. As the fluid dissolves, the smell will dissipate.
  • Lighter fluid is highly flammable. Use it away from heat sources.
