1. Download GIMP from the official website (see Resources). GIMP is an open source graphics program that is constantly evolving. GIMP is free, so you should never download it from a site that requests you pay for it.

2. Install and open the GIMP image software program. GIMP installs and uninstalls seamlessly and works smoothly on Linux, Mac and Windows operating systems.

3. You will presented with a toolbox that offers access to a wide array of drawing and image manipulation tools. on the "File" menu select the "New" option. GIMP presents you with a number of image size templates to choose for the basis of your project. In addition to creating an image from scratch, you can use this menu to open a photograph (GIMP handles several files types) on your computer or from an Internet URL. A new window will open that displays the image file you want to work on.

4. Use the toolbox, which is always available and can be moved anywhere on your desktop independent of the project window you're working in, to access the tools you need. There are pencil and paint tools for creating images from scratch. Use the image editing functions (burn, dodge, smooth, edge enhance) to touch up your project. You can also access the text effect tool to add artistic text to your images.

6. Use the "Filters" menu to create animations and logos. GIMP is a full featured drawing and animation software that allows you to create moving cartoons and professional logos.
