How to Convert a QuickTime Movie to MPEG

By Joshua Duvauchelle

QuickTime is a video authoring and playback program developed and released by Apple Inc. QuickTime's native format is the MOV file format. MPEG is an alternative file format used for movies. Learn how to convert a Quicktime MOV file to an MPEG file without loosing playback quality.

Step 1

Launch the QuickTime Pro software by double-clicking its icon in the Applications folder (on a Mac) or selecting it from the Start menu (on a Windows PC). If you do not have Quicktime Pro, you may download it from Apple.com (see Resources).

Step 2

Drag the MOV file to the Quicktime screen. Alternatively, click "File" in the top menu bar and select "Open" to find the file you wish to convert.

Step 3

Click "File" in the top menu and select "Export" from the drop-down menu. A dialog window will appear on the screen.

Step 4

Select "MPEG" from the drop-down menu of available file types to which QuickTime can convert the movie file. Press the "Save" button to convert the file. Wait for the conversion process to finish. This process may take several minutes, depending on the speed of your computer processor and the length of the original MOV file.
