Opportunities for computer animators are growing. More businesses look for animators to update their websites, and the technology advances that make animation easier to create and integrate can be used in many different areas. Professional computer animators must possess a combination of creativity and technological skills to be successful. While platforms exist for anyone to create electronic animation, there are certain steps to take to become a paid computer animator.

  1. Step 1

    Develop artistic talents by taking art classes and creating your own mastery over a medium. Draw, paint and sketch to practice and work on your skills. Developing a craft as an artist is one of the most important talents that employers look for when they interview for computer animator positions. Have a well-developed portfolio of your hand-drawn art to bring to an interview.

  2. Step 2

    Master the computer animation programs that are typically used for commercial applications. Take courses to learn the intricacies of motion capture, texture mapping, storyboard layout and audio techniques. Look for programs that offer instruction in building 3-D models, video editing, characterization and post-production techniques.

  3. Step 3

    Look for a school with an outstanding computer lab in which you will develop your skills at computer animation. Earn a 4-year degree in computer animation that will allow you to put together a portfolio of work to add to your drawings. There are a number of online schools that specialize in computer animation degrees including the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and Westwood College. Earn a bachelor in media arts and animation from the Arts Institutes or the International Academy of Design & Technology.

    Apply for a position as a computer animator at film companies and video game businesses. Consider working for marketing firms that create television, web and film advertising and that are building computer animation divisions to meet client demand.

    Network with professionals in the field of animation to make contacts that can lead to a job. Expand your knowledge through training seminars and programs offered by the trade groups. Join the Visual Effects Society and take advantage of the many training and mentoring programs it offers. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is one of the oldest and most active computer associations that offers a multitude of opportunities for networking and training in fields that employ computer animators.
