How to Buy a Good iPod Touch Dock
The right dock can turn your iPod Touch into a piece of high-end home audio equipment. A dock can charge your iPod Touch or allow you to transfer songs from your computer without the need to constantly look for your USB cable. A good dock should ideally also have high-quality speakers that you can use to play music on your iPod Touch when you do not want to use the earbuds. Select the right iPod Touch dock by looking for the key features that will bring out the best in your portable device.

1
Select a dock with built-in speakers. A basic dock such as the Apple Universal Dock does nothing but synchronize the iPod Touch with your computer. A speaker dock allows you to play music using the iPod Touch as if it were a bookshelf stereo system. If you are looking for a small dock, consider purchasing one with a subwoofer for improved bass response. If you have a home stereo already, you can forego the speakers and select a dock with an audio output jack instead.

2
Select a dock that connects to the iPod Touch using the Universal Dock Connector. This is the small narrow port on the bottom of the iPod Touch. All iPod models, with the exception of the iPod Shuffle, use the Universal Dock Connector so this ensures that you will be able to use the dock with future iPods that you purchase. In addition, you can only use the dock to control the iPod Touch if this connection is used. Avoid a dock that requires you to connect an audio cable from the iPod's headphone port.

3
Purchase a dock with a remote control. If your dock is across the room from your chair, you would not want to stand up every time you want to change songs.
-
4
Listen to audio playback on the dock if possible before purchasing it. Like all audio equipment, iPod Touch docks may vary widely in sound quality. Auditioning the equipment first allows you to confirm that it has a tonal response you find acceptable.

5
Purchase a dock with a USB port. This allows you to connect the dock to your computer, charging and synchronizing it while you play music.
