When you are out boating and are ready to toss the anchor into the water, you certainly do not want to have to worry about your anchor rope. One way to achieve this is to braid the rope to the anchor chain so that it is securely attached. Use a nylon rope since it has the elasticity needed to absorb the shock of the anchor holding against the force of the waves and current. Keep it out of sunlight when it is not in use and your anchor rope will last for years.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Three-strand nylon rope
  • Utility knife
  • Superglue
  • Match
  • Swedish fid
  • Electrical tape
  • Anchor chain
  1. Step 1

Unravel the rope about 12 inches down from the end. If it has been melted to keep it from unraveling, either pull the strands apart or cut them. If you end up cutting them, put a piece of electrical tape on the end to keep it from fraying.

  2. Step 2

Lay out the anchor chain in front of you. Take two of the unraveled sections of rope and pass them through the end chain link. Now hold the third section and pass it through the same link but come in from the other side. The two strands should be sticking out in one direction and the one strand in the other.

  3. Step 3

Take one of the strands and bring it down to the rope and away from the chain. Stick your Swedish fid into and under a section of the rope. If the rope is twisted from left to right, come in from the right side so that you are going against the twist. Pull it down firmly, but not too tight.

  4. Step 4

Twist the rope a little so another side is facing up and slide the fid into another section. Pull the next section through and hold it down. Do it again for the last strand. All three sections should now be tucked back into the rope.

  5. Step 5

Continue weaving the sections into the rope, twisting it slightly for each strand and going down a section each time until you have completed six tucks for each strand. Now unravel each strand so that it has two sections. Take a section from one and combine it with a section of the one next to it. Give it a twist and then apply a little Superglue to it, just above where it meets the rope.
