Get Home Improvement Loans
Get Home Improvement Loans

People get home improvement loans for many different reasons. Whether you want to add to your home or remodel a room that is still stuck in the seventies, it's going to take money. This is a step by step guide on how to get a home improvement loan.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet
  • Recent Pay Stubs
  • Tax returns
  • Financial Statements including Assets and Debts
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

The first thing that you have to decide is what kind of home improvement loan do you need. You might be getting a first time loan on a home and decide that this is a good time to borrow extra money to fix something or add something to your home. Maybe you are considering refinancing your mortgage, getting a second mortgage, or even applying for a home equity line of credit to improve your home. No matter what you choose, all of these options could serve the purpose.

  2. Step 2

Next you must find a lender. Many people stick with their original lender but there are options. It is more than worth the work to shop around and compare lenders. When comparing lenders check with banks, mortgage lenders and credit unions and be sure to compare interest rates, closing costs and other terms of the loan to make an informed decision.

  3. Step 3

Now that you have hopefully decided on a lender, be sure to get all of your financial documents in order. You are going to need to fill out a loan application and the lender will need to appraise your home and check your credit score. Some of the other things that you might need could be current pay stubs, tax returns and employer information among other documents.

  4. Step 4

Finally, now that you have applied for a loan and provided all of the necessary documentation, you have to do the most difficult part...waiting patiently. Sometimes lenders can approve a loan immediately and sometimes it takes time but either way make sure that the terms of the loan fit your needs and do not agree on a loan that you are not comfortable with.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the internet to shop around and get comparisons online. This is one of the easiest ways to shop for a home improvement loan.
  • Most people will say to only borrow what you need but there is always a possibility that the cost of an improvement can rise due to unexpected circumstances so prepare for this if possible.
  • Make sure to compare everything about the terms before accepting a loan. Check the interest rate, length, closing costs, etc. very carefully.
