Instructions

Do exercises that strengthen the rectus abdominis, the muscles that run vertically on both sides of the abdomen. These exercises can include situps, crunches and the bicycle crunch. The bicycle crunch also works the oblique muscles. Perform at least three sets of eight to 12 reps.
2
Perform exercises that strengthen the transverse abdominis. These are the muscles layered just below the internal obliques. A good exercise for this is the cross, a fairly simple exercise performed standing up. The movement is basically pulling your belly button in toward your spine repeatedly. You also do this hanging from elbow straps or pullup handles. Perform at least three sets of eight to 12 reps.
3
Do exercises that strengthen the oblique muscles. There are the inner obliques and the external obliques, and they run along the outer edge of the abdominal section. Some exercises to work the obliques include the bicycle crunch, the side plank and broom twists. For the side plank, try holding the position for 30 to 60 seconds (or as long as you can) for at least three sets. For the others, perform at least three sets of eight to 12 reps.
