Baking powder is used in many quick bread recipes and cakes.

So you want to bake your favorite quick bread or pancakes, and there is no baking powder in the house? Here is a simple way to substitute baking powder with baking soda. Using baking soda instead is also a healthier way to leaven your baked goodies.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Note the amount of baking powder called for in your recipe, and measure *half* that amount of baking soda. Add the baking soda to your dry ingredients, and sift as usual.

  2. Step 2

How much liquid does the recipe call for? Add one (1) teaspoon of vinegar per cup of liquid in the recipe. If the liquid is milk, I like to add the vinegar directly to the milk and let it make "buttermilk" before mixing it all together. This seems to make a moister bread or pancake.

  3. Step 3

Mix the dry and wet ingredients together thoroughly, and let the batter stand for a minute before baking or cooking.

  4. Step 4

Bake or cook according to the rest of the recipe instructions. This is such a simple way to cook healthier foods! Baking soda and vinegar are healthy alternatives to baking powder, which usually contains aluminum.

on 5/27/2009 You know I forgot about baking powder containing aluminum. Thanks for the reminder! Also adding half the the amount for the baking soda and adding one teaspoon of vinegar sounds like an easy and healthy alternative. Thanks. 5*s
