The easiest way to clear a clogged sink is by using a plunger. This method just uses the simple force of water to break up and clear away any blockages without needing any special tools or needing to disassemble anything.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • plunger
  • rags
  • plastic bags
  • two small boards
  • c-clamp
  1. Step 1

Most kitchen sinks have a rubber hose that runs off them into the dishwasher. The first thing you have to do when dealing with a clogged sink is to pinch this closed. I find the easiest way is by putting a small piece of wood on either side and then pressing them together with a c-clamp.

  2. Step 2

If your kitchen sink is a double sink, you'll need to seal off the other drain to keep the water from coming back up that side. This is easily accomplished by wrapping rags in a plastic back and shoving it down into the drain as best you can. This provides a nearly air-tight seal. If you are having trouble with it coming up try to find a helper who can put their weight on it as you work.

  3. Step 3

Now that you're all set up take the trap out of the sink you'll be working in, and clear away all the visible debris that is caught in it. Fill this sink with water at least high enough to over the cup of the plunger.

  4. Step 4

Place the plunger directly over the drain so none of it is visible. Pump it down rapidly, at least 10-20 times before quickly removing. You may need to repeat this step several times to unclog sinks that are particularly stubborn.

  5. Step 5

Remember to take the rags out of the other sink and your clamp off the dishwasher hose after you're finished unclogging your drain!

Tips & Warnings
  • For shorter people try standing on a stool when plunging for better leverage.
