Step 1
As simple as it seems, this will save big at checkout: Do NOT go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. Even if you go prepared with a list, when you are hunger, everything will look good. Magically things you don't need will find their way into your cart simply because they look "yummy".

Step 2
Learn the power of pasta! I realize not everyone loves Italian food the way that I do. But most people will enjoy the benefits of pasta. It cost very little, is very filling, and goes along way. Let's examine this:
Spaghetti noodles cost roughly $.89 a box. One can of spaghetti sauce on sale is $1.00. So, you have fed your entire family for $1.89. Also, keep in mind, you won't need the entire box of noodles, and you will probably have some left over, so you've saved money on lunch the next day!
The point is, pasta noodles are cheap. Generally if you shop around, you can get sauces for a reasonable price as well. You will spend less, feel full, and spend less money. Look into it! -
Step 3
Coupons, Coupons, Coupons! They are out there, all you have to do is look. But, here's something to keep in mind:
I have found I save more money buy buying an off-brand item, than I do when I use a coupon for that brand-name product. So just because you have that coupon doesn't mean you are getting the best deal. Take a moment to look around the shelves. When you are using coupons, try to double up on them as much as possible. You can also combine your coupons with... -
Step 4
The store club card. Many stores offer a club or savings card. All you have to do is go to the customer service desk, and fill out the little brochure. It doesn't cost you a thing, but it can save you hundreds! Stores also offer little promotions that are linked to the card. Sometimes they do gas discounts, or a free deli sandwich. Another common one is a free gallon of milk. You can check the stores website or your receipt to find out the current promotions. Then shop as you normally would, and present your card to the cashier. My husband and I kept our receipts for one month. Yes, we spent $500 at the grocery store, but we saved $280 just by using the card. We also got a $.50 gas discount.
