The ability to remove solder is essential for anyone wishing to operate on a circuit board. Because everything from the transistor to the capacitor is going to be soldered onto the circuit board, replacing any of these parts will require you to remove the solder. Soldering is not difficult, but because it is such a delicate process, it's important that you have the proper tools before you begin.

From Quick Guide: A Basic Guide to Soldering
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Solder removal tool (suction based)
  • Soldering iron
  • Vise
  1. Step 1

Clamp the circuit board into the vise.

  2. Step 2

    Heat up the soldering iron.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the solder removal tool. This usually involves clicking the top of the device so that the interior tip of the tool extends outward. The device should begin sucking after you click it.

  4. Step 4

Hold the heated soldering iron against the solder that you want removed. You should hold the soldering iron against the solder until it begins to melt, while at the same time holding the tip of the solder removal tool directly above the solder you are melting. Once the solder melts enough, the solder removal tool should automatically suck it up.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be careful not to hold the iron directly against the solder too long or you will risk ruining the circuit board's trace.
