How to Hide Icons on a Mac Desktop

If you like to keep the desktop of your Mac computer clean and organized, you may want to remove the icons that, by default, automatically show up on the desktop. In the latest version of the Mac OS X operating system, version 10.5 Leopard, you can choose to hide certain desktop icons like hard disks and other media.

      Click anywhere on the desktop of your computer to switch to the "Finder."

      Go to the "Finder" menu at the top of the screen and select "Preferences."

      Go to the "General" tab at the top of the preferences window.

      Uncheck all of the boxes underneath the "Show items on Desktop" label.

      Close the preferences window to save the settings. Icons for hard disks and other media will now be hidden on the desktop.
