Understand the limitations of file restoration on the Windows Mobile operating system. Unlike its full-featured desktop counterpart, Windows Mobile on smart phones, PDAs and Pocket PCs does not contain a standard Windows Recycle Bin. Unless you modify your copy of Windows Mobile, a deleted file will instantly be removed from Windows Mobile without easy recourse.
Windows Mobile is the mobile version of the Windows operating system developed and released by the Microsoft Corporation. Windows Mobile is used on a variety of hand-held personal digital assistants (PDAs), as well as many smartphones. Occasionally, an individual may delete a file on Windows Mobile and wish to get it back. It is important to learn how to restore deleted files to protect against accidental data loss.
Things You'll Need
- Resco Explorer (optional)
- DEXplor (optional)
- Syncing cable for your PDA or smartphone
Modify the Windows Mobile installation with third-party extension software. Launch your desktop computer's browser and download a file explorer program. Popular examples include DEXplor and Resco Explorer (see links in the Resources section). Such programs add certain file management features regularly found on the regular Windows desktop operating system but missing in Windows Mobile, such as a pseudo Recycle Bin.
Connect your smart phone or PDA to your computer using the original syncing cable that came with the device. Windows Mobile will then sync the file explorer program from Step 2 onto your hand-held device, installing it in Windows Mobile. A "Recycle Bin" will now appear on your home screen.
Double-click the "Recycle Bin" to retrieve any files that you may have deleted accidentally. If installing the file management software after you have already deleted a file, you may or may not find it in the Recycle Bin dependent upon the longevity of your system cache. However, all files deleted from here on forth will be placed into the Recycle Bin rather than disappearing immediately.
Tips & Warnings
- Always backup data that you have synced onto your Windows Mobile device so that you have an extra copy in case you delete the mobile version.
