Observe the stems. Dead leaves are not necessarily a sign of a dead rose bush. If the stems are green in color, then your rose bush is alive.

Inspect the rose bush for trauma. If you spot a broken stem, above-ground roots or significant pest damage on the leaves, there is a good chance that your rose bush is dying or dead. Prune back the damaged areas in an effort to restore the bush's life.

Scrape a stem. If the rose bush's stems appear brown or black in color, it's a sign that it may be dead but it doesn't confirm it is. Sometimes the inside of the stems may be green, thereby showing signs of life. Gently scrape the exterior of a stem to reveal its interior. If the inside of a stem is green, you can still revive the rose bush.

Assess the stems' flexibility. A dead rose bush will feature brittle, dry stems whereas a live rose bush will have flexible stems. Attempt to bend one of the bush's stems. If it breaks in half, the bush is likely dead. If it bends, it is likely alive.

Wait until spring. Sometimes a rose bush you thought was dead will surprise you in the spring. If new shoots form on the rose bush, it still has life in it. Care for the rose bush as you normally would, giving it proper water, soil and sunshine.
