How to Diagnose a Mechanical Problem with an IBM Aptiva Computer

It is important to know the difference between mechanical problems and software problems on your IBM Aptiva Computer. Mechanical problems deal with physical components operating incorrectly, whereas software problems deal with issues involving your operating system, BIOS, or specific programs. To identify the mechanical issue, you must first narrow it down by checking each piece of hardware.

Instructions

If your optical mouse, or laser mouse, is not tracking properly or at all, there are several main possibilities. First, verify that the mouse is plugged in properly by unplugging it from your IBM Aptiva and then plugging it back in. If the laser is not on and no light is coming from the bottom of the mouse, the cable may be faulty. Second, verify that there are no obstructions in the way of the laser, which can also cause tracking inaccuracies.

Similar to the optical mouse, first test the cable on your mechanical mouse by unplugging it from your IBM Aptiva and plugging it back in. If this does not fix the issue, twist the ball covering on the bottom of the mouse to remove the housing. Remove the ball and clean it, using compressed air to clean out the inside of the mouse.

If your IBM Aptiva's monitor is not responding, verify that both the power cable and data cable are properly connected by unplugging them and and plugging them back in. If you know that the power outlet being used by the monitor is good, then either your cables are bad, or the power switch itself is broken.

Unplug the power cable from both the wall and your IBM Aptiva, then plug it back in. If the computer still won't turn on, the problem could be the cables, power switch, or power supply.

    • 5

Most mechanical computer problems occur in printers. Once again, unplug and plug back in both the power and data cables. If the printer powers on, check the LCD screen if there are any error messages. The error messages can be looked up in the user manual or online. Also, check for paper that may be caught in the rollers or other areas of the printer.

If printing appears splotchy or has vertical or horizontal lines, and you know the cartridges are full, check the user manual instructions on performing a cartridge cleaning operation. Also, verify that the printer cartridges are firmly inserted into place by removing them and reinserting them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most mechanical problems are simple, such as loose wires; however, more complex mechanical issues will typically require an experienced technician or computer users to repair. If you are a computer novice, seek help from knowledgeable users or professionals to avoid damage to your IBM Aptiva or personal injury.
