How to Partition a Flash Drive

A partition is a section on a disk drive that has been separated from other sections, thereby dividing the storage space of a disk drive. To do this to a flash drive, which is a compact storage device for computers, you have to modify the drive with BootIt and then partition it as you would a standard hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install BootIt, a program that will change the structure of your flash drive (see Resources).

    • 2

Insert the flash drive into an open USB port. Open BootIt.

    • 3

Click the "Flip Removable Bit" button. This will cause Windows to recognize the flash drive as a fixed disk instead of a removable disk.

    • 4

Eject the flash drive and re-insert it into the USB port.

    • 5

Click "Start," followed by "Run." Here, type in "diskmgmt.msc". This will lead you to Disk Management.

    • 6

Locate your flash drive in the list of drives. Then, right click it and select the "Delete Partition" option. Then, right click it again and select the "New Partition" option.

    • 7

Follow the on screen instructions and create a "Primary Partition." When finished, your flash drive will be partitioned.
