How to Scan a Hard Drive
Whenever you have problems with your computer, the first thing you should do is use ScanDisk to scan for any errors. Running ScanDisk is a very easy process.

Double click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.

A list of multiple drives will populate the window. Right click on the drive you want to scan and click "Properties."

Numerous options will be given across the top of the screen. Click on the "Tools" option.

In the "Tools" section, there should be three options: error-checking, defragmentation and backup. Click on the error-checking option to scan your hard drive.

Before the scan starts, a box will pop up with two options. One option is "Automatically fix file system errors" and the other is "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors." To completely scan your computer and fix the errors, check both boxes. Click "Start" and ScanDisk will scan the hard drive.
