If you are carrying a baby around or suffering from an injury that leaves you with only one arm free, there's no reason you can't cook, and cook well. In fact, one of the few chefs in the world who has the honor of two Michelin stars, Michael Caines, is a one-armed cook, after losing his other arm in a car accident at the beginning of his career.

Things You'll Need:

  • Precut vegetables
  • Chopped meat
  • Segmented chicken
  • Ground spices
  1. Step 1

Purchase pots and pans that have one handle. These are meant to be carried with one hand, so they're easy to use if you only have one arm. Pasta can be cooked in a large saucepan, for example, and drained into a colander that is already sitting in the sink.

  2. Step 2

Buy vegetables that are precut. One of the most difficult parts of having one arm in the kitchen is cutting and chopping. Luckily, most supermarkets have vegetables that are already cut and packaged.

  3. Step 3

Use meat that is ground, chopped or already segmented. A whole chicken is hard to maneuver and carve, but packaged chicken breasts are easy to manage. Ground or chopped meat can be separated, mixed and cooked with one hand as well.

  4. Step 4

Use spices that are preground. Instead of fighting with a pepper grinder or a mortar and pestle, use ground spices that can be measured or pinched with one hand.

  5. Step 5

Consider installing a vise or clamp in your kitchen. Commonly used in tool sheds, a vise is useful for items that simply need two hands--opening a jar, for example.
