How to Clean a Contact Lens Case

Whether you're using disposable or permanent lenses, hard or soft, clean handling and storage procedures are vital for the comfort and health of your eyes. One of the most important aspects of maintaining this cleanliness is a proper cleaning and handling of your contact lens case. Contact lens cases should be cleaned daily to prevent your lenses from coming into contact with bacteria, dust and sediments.

Things You'll Need

  • Liquid hand soap
  • Clean, unused toothbrush

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly. Use a mild hand soap and warm water. Be sure to rinse away all soap residue and avoid touching any lotions or oils until after you've finished cleaning your contact lens case.

    • 2

Remove your contact lenses from their case and set them aside. If you wash your contact lens case while still wearing your lenses, this is not necessary, but otherwise, you will need to place the lenses in a spare, clean case with storing solution or in a clean bowl of solution. Be sure to use two separate bowls if your lenses have different strength prescriptions in each eye so as to avoid confusing the left and right lenses.

    • 3

Empty your lens case of any remaining solution by pouring it down the drain.

    • 4

Rinse the lens case and covers in hot running water. Use the hottest water you can stand to handle, as this will help destroy any bacteria as well as help rinse away any grime.

    • 5

Scrub the case and covers with a clean, unused toothbrush, hot water and soap. Use only a pea-sized amount of liquid soap, since this will be plenty to clean the case and using too much will make it more difficult to rinse the case clean. Scrub the entire case, including the outside, top, and bottom (this will help prevent transference of dirt to the area where the lenses are). Pay special attention to the threads of the caps if the case has screw-on covers and look for any deposits of dried saline.

    • 6

Rinse the lens case thoroughly to remove any traces of soap.

    • 7

Dry the lens case with the lint-free towel. If there are any traces of water you can't remove this way, let the case air-dry before you fill it with storing solution and put your lenses back in, since tap water can damage contact lenses.
