Building a banner to link to a website is a basic part of running a website. If you want to advertise your website on other sites, or allow others to advertise on your site, you will need to know how to make and work with banners. Creating a free website banner can be done in very little time, and once you learn how you'll likely begin improving techniques and be on your way to improving your banners.

1
Open an image editing program; it can be as simple as Microsoft Paint or as complex as Photoshop.
-
2
Create a new image and set the parameters of your image. You will need to find the limits of the banner size, which depend on where the banner will be shown. Usually the image will be very wide, perhaps between 650- 800 DPI, and very short in height, possibly around 150 DPI or less.

3
Create or paste into this image some image or words that will draw people's attention to the site that will be linked to it. Putting in the name of the website is also a good idea.
-
4
Save the image with a web friendly format, like a .jpg file, to minimize the file size so that it will load quickly on webpages. You may need to compress the image to get it under the file size limits of banner hosts.
-
5
Send the image to whoever will host the banner. If you will host the banner, when you insert the image just include a link to the website. If you want to build a site that rotates banners on your own page you can find php and other types of scripts online (see resources) to do just that.
