How to Reduce Uric Acid in the Body

Uric acid is a chemical in the body that is created when substances called purines are broken down in the blood. Purines are mostly found in alcoholic beverages and meat products. When you consume too many purines, uric acid is increased and causes a condition called gout, which is an accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. Reducing uric acid is possible with the use of natural therapies and adjustments to the diet.

Instructions

    • 1

Reduce the intake of foods that are high in purines. Purines are natural substances that when broken down completely form uric acid. Meats, such as pork, beef and lamb, contain a high amount of purines. Instead, eat foods that don't contain a lot of purines, such as tofu and broccoli.

    • 2

Eat a cup of cherries every day. Cherries contain compounds called anthocyanins, which give them their dark red color. Anthocyanins are known to significantly reduce uric acid.

    • 3

Eat foods containing high fiber, such as raspberries, avocado, bran cereals and lentils. Fiber is known to prevent excessive build up of uric acid.

    • 4

Eliminate the consumption of alcohol, which is notorious for increasing uric acid. Also avoid drinking the so-called non-alcoholic beers. All non-alcoholic beers or wines will contain some alcohol. If you have the urge to drink, sip a tsp. of apple cider vinegar. Not only will the vinegar remove your alcohol cravings, it will help reduce uric acid.

    • 5

Get an acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture will drastically reduce the uric acid in the blood. Inform the acupuncturist that you specifically want a treatment to reduce uric acid, and she will know where to place the sterile needles.
