How to Detox From Organophosphates

Organophosphates are potent chemicals that work on the nervous system by primarily inhibiting an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase. Because acetylcholinesterase breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, organophosphates lead to abnormally high levels of acetylcholine, which can be toxic at high levels and cause the heart to slow. Organophosphates are often in high concentrations primarily in areas where there is runoff from fertilizers and pesticides used in agriculture.

      Take atropine. The initial symptoms of organophosphate poisoning are caused by stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which, among other things, slows down the heart. Atropine blocks these effects and serves as an antidote to the poisoning.

      Ingest liquid bentonite. As the organophosphates are broken down, some will be stored and re-excreted into the digestive system. Liquid bentonite will help prevent the re-absorption of the phosphorus and other breakdown products by the intestines.

      Take calcium and magnesium supplements. These minerals bind to the breakdown products from the organophosphates, which will help reduce their toxicity and allow the body to get rid of them.

      Take an iron-free multivitamin. This will help keep your body's vitamin levels in balance, but adding additional iron can cause a reaction with the organophosphates, which will only cause tissue damage.

      Rest, avoid exercise and stay hydrated. It is important to avoid strenuous exercise, as this can release organophosphates and their breakdown products from tissues, increasing their level in the blood. After about two weeks, most of these compounds should be eliminated from the body and it will be OK to then resume normal activities.
