How to Minimize Hair Shedding on Boston Terrier Dogs

How to Minimize Hair Shedding on Boston Terrier Dogs thumbnail
Boston terriers require minimal coat care.

The Boston terrier's coat is short with sleek black and white or brindle-colored fur. Most of the time this little dog is easy to groom. However, the Boston terrier may experience shedding problems two or more times per year, often in late spring and early summer as the outdoor temperatures cause him to "blow" his coat or he experiences normal coat re-growth. During these times, you can minimize shedding with special bathing and brushing techniques.

Things You'll Need

  • Dog shampoo for sensitive skin
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Soft bristle dog brush

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your Boston terrier twice a week throughout the year to keep his coat healthy and to remove loose hair. According to Dog-Breed-Facts.com, rubbing him down with a damp towel several times a week is all that is usually necessary to control normal shedding most of the year and to keep him clean.

    • 2

Bathe your dog with a mild dog shampoo for sensitive skin during periods of increased shedding. Dry skin can become itchy and prompt your dog to scratch frequently, resulting in additional hair loss. Consult your veterinarian if you notice more skin flakes than usual on your Boston terrier.

Fill a spray bottle with a combination of equal parts apple cider vinegar and warm tap water. After shampooing, rinsing and towel-drying your dog, spray his fur liberally with the cider/water solution and massage it into his skin, saturating his coat. Avoid getting the solution in his eyes. Allow him to dry naturally, without rinsing.

Remove excess hair from your dog after his coat is completely dry by using a soft bristle brush. The apple cider vinegar solution will loosen the hairs that are ready to fall out, allowing you to brush them easily away. Finish grooming by rubbing a damp towel over his coat to attract and remove any remaining loose hairs.

Prevent additional skin disorders in Boston Terriers by cleaning creases that may harbor bacteria. Liz Palika, author of "Howell Book of Dogs," recommends a daily wiping of facial wrinkles to keep your dog's skin healthy.

    • 6

Add a coat supplement to your Boston Terrier's food once or twice a week if his coat becomes dull and his skin appears dry. A healthy coat resists excess hair loss. (See Resources)

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using the apple cider solution on open wounds or sores as it may sting your dog.
