How to Lay Flagstone on Cement
Laying your own flagstone on cement is an easier project than you may think. With a little sweat and hard work, you can do the job yourself and save hundreds of dollars. Laying flagstone over cement requires very few materials. It's important to use thin-set mortar, not regular mortar, because thin-set mortar has the flexibility to expand and shrink a bit with the winter cold and summer heat. This will prevent your flagstone from cracking or coming loose. Does this Spark an idea?

Power-wash the concrete where you will be laying the flagstone, or if you don't have a power-washer, use the spray feature of your garden hose. Allow to fully dry.

2
Mix the thin-set mortar according to the package directions. Each brand of mortar will have slightly different directions.

3
Spread a layer of mortar 1/4 to 1/2 an inch thick on the side of the flagstone that will face down against the cement. Lay the flagstone against the cement and press down slightly.
-
4
Continue laying flagstone, leaving gaps in between each stone, as large or small as you like to fit your aesthetic. The stones should not sit flush against one another.
-
5
Once you have finished laying down all your flagstone, give the mortar 24 hours to set and dry.
-
6
Mix the powdered color additive with your grout if you're using it. Apply grout in between the stones, smoothing it with your trowel.
