One person's virtual character in Second Life.

Second Life is a 3D virtual world that is built and owned lock stock and barrel by its residents. In fact, there are almost 6 million residents in Second Life, all of which are spending money. Many real life business owners are residents in Second Life and start businesses in Second Life with the intention of advertising their real of-line businesses. Some companies that are using Second Life are Xerox, Toyota and Wells Fargo. Here is how to start a business in Second Life.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your product. Anything that you would need in real life is needed in the virtual world of Second Life. So, some ideas might be clothes, furniture and computers, to name a few. However, don't forget services. People in Second Life need those as well.

    • 2

Determine the price for your product.

    • 3

Set a budget for how much you are willing to spend renting your business location in Second Life, then go shopping. You want a business that charges about 1 linden per prim. A Linden is the monetary denomination in Second Life, and a prim is what objects in Second Life are made from. So, for example, if you decided to rent a location for $500 linden per week and your location had 300 prim, then you'd pay about $1.70 a week to rent that location.

Choose the location for your business in Second Life. Choose a location that has a low computer lag time, and then advertise in high traffic areas on Second Life. This way you don't have people leaving your online business because of the computer lag time.

    • 5

Rent the location of your choice for your business in Second Life. Open your doors for business.

    • 6

Decide on a budget for your advertising campaign in Second Life. While there are some free ways to advertise your business on Second Life, you will want to add some paid for ways as well.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do free advertising on Second Life before doing any paid advertising. Join the Second Life forum, add your business information to your profil and have a grand-opening where you give away something for free or have a treasure hunt for example. If you can afford it, purchase your own island, instead of renting a location. This way you can rent to other businesses, and you can determine the computer lag time. Consider taking on a partner or two to defray costs. Use your virtual business to advertise your real-life business if you have one.

  • High traffic areas in Second Life have a lot of computer lag time, meaning that some people will just leave rather than checking out your store, if your store is in one of these locations.
