A "torrent" file is one used by a special file-sharing program called a Bit torrent. Bit torrents allow for faster rates in file transfers, due to the fact that many different users can more efficiently download the same file at the same time. This is done by cutting the file up into bits, so that each user can both upload and download different pieces of the file simultaneously. To get a torrent file to work, you must extract it from any type of archive it is in, such as a ".zip" file, and it must also be opened by a bit torrent program.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download and install a bit torrent program. One example is Utorrent (see Resources).

  2. Step 2

Download and install an extraction program like "Winzip."

  3. Step 3

Open your torrent file by double-clicking on it. If the torrent file is inside a file that ends with ".zip," your extraction program should automatically allow you to gain access to the torrent file.

  4. Step 4

Open the torrent file itself in the same way: by double-clicking on it.

  5. Step 5

Open the torrent file; it should cause your bit torrent program to automatically load. Hit "OK" on the screen that asks whether you want to open the torrent with your bit torrent program. Approve which files you will be downloading by hitting "OK" again on the following popup window. This should fully extract your torrent file and begin downloading of the desired file with the torrent.

Tips & Warnings
  • Transfer of a file (such as a movie or game) that you do not own can be illegal.
