How to Make a String Crucifix
Plain household string is inexpensive and easy to use when crocheting a cross. No pattern is necessary for this project because size is based on the gauge of the crocheted string. Once you have determined that you can crochet any size cross and use it for anything from a bookmark to a decorative necklace. You can finish a small cross in 30 minutes.

1
Determine the gauge of your string by crocheting a 6-by-6 inch square. Chain 41 stitches. At the end of the chains, work back along that row in a single crochet stitch. Single crochet is done by inserting the hook into the next to the last stitch and pulling up a loop. Pull a loop through both loops on the crochet hook, and continue across the row.

2
Bind off the last stitch when an approximate 6-by-6 inch size is reached. Steam lightly and measure how many stitches per inch and how many rows per inch. From this base measurement, you can determine how tall and wide your cross will be.

Use this pattern as an example. If it is five stitches per inch and seven rows per inch, and you want a cross to measure 1 inch wide and 3 inches tall with a 2-inch-wide cross piece, chain five stitches. Make a turning chain at the end of the row. Do single crochet stitches across the row, and continue for 14 rows. At the end of the 14th row chain five, make a turning chain and single crochet across the row. At the end of the row chain five, add a turning chain, and continue across the length of the row. Continue for seven rows. Work across five stitches to the vertical body of the cross. Continue to work across those five stitches for seven more rows.

Bind off the last stitch if you want a single cross. Continue crocheting across the final two stitches if you want to turn the cross into a necklace. Measure the length of the cord until it reaches the desired length to hang around your neck. Attach the cord to the cross by picking up and crocheting the last two stitches along with the two end stitches at the top of the cross. Bind off the last stitch, and hide the tail end in the body of the cross.
