How to Install Crown Molding Using the Coping Method

Ceiling molding is available in three basic shapes. A contemporary design is rectangular with beveled edges, while traditional profiles include crown and cove moldings. The installation of crown molding is similar to that for base molding in that one piece of the inside corner is usually coped to fit the profiled face of the other corner crown molding when installed. 6D or 8D nails are then used to install the crown molding in place. Instructions

    • 1

Position the crown molding in the power miter box so the bottom edge is pressed against the fence of the miter box. Some miter boxes have a special fence that can be used to keep the crown molding in place at this angle when cutting. In most cases, crown molding is installed at a 45-degree angle. When cutting crown molding on the miter box, it should look the same on the miter box fence as it would on the wall when installed.

    • 2

Rotate and lock the miter box blade at the 45-degree mark. Cut the crown molding. Make sure to hold the crown molding firmly in place while cutting, keeping fingers and other body parts out of the cutting area.

    • 3

Trace the profile of the crown molding on the back so it aligns with the cut that was just made. Do this by placing a piece of crown molding along the 45-degree cut and tracing it with a pencil.

    • 4

Use the coping saw to cut the traced lines so the cut looks like the profile of the molding.

    • 5

Place the coped cut up to crown molding profile to make sure it fits closely. Finally, fine-tune any cuts so they fit together before installing.
