Knitted Hat

Knitting is a long-time craft to make clothes, blankets and accessories. Knitted caps are ideal as they are thick and will keep the head warm, as opposed to some types of caps. Beginner patterns are also great, even for the experienced knitter. Knitted caps can be made with any color or design to fit individual tastes. Make some for the winter and/or give as gifts.

Things You'll Need

  • 200 yards of yarn, any color
  • 16-inch circular knitting needle
  • 16-inch double pointed knitting needle
  • Tapestry Needle (also called weaving needle)
  • Instructions for each stitch technique

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1
      Circular Knitting Needles

Cast 96 stitches onto circular knitting needle. This is the bottom of the cap.

    • 2

Knit a stocking stitch, back and forth for 5 rows. Do not turn. Complete the circle by joining the 2 ends, making sure the yarn is not twisted and that the curled edge is facing out.

    • 3

      Knit 2, purl 2 for 6 rounds.

    • 4

Knit a stocking stitch all the way around until the cap reaches 7 inches.

    • 5

Decrease the stitches for 1 round by knitting 4 stitches together, then 2 stitches together, alternating all the way around. You should now have 80 stitches.

    • 6

Knit a stocking stitch for 1 round.

    • 7

Repeat Step 5, except knit 3 stitches, followed by 2 stitches.

    • 8
      Double Pointed Needles

Repeat Step 6. Change to double pointed needles when there aren't enough stitches for the loop.

    • 9

Repeat Step 5, decreasing the first set by 1 stitch until there are only 32 stitches left.

    • 10

Knit 2 stitches together until there are only 8 stitches left.

    • 11

Cut a 7-inch tail from the yarn. Thread onto the tapestry needle or weaving needle and pull the 8 stitches together in a star pattern until the top is cinched tightly together. Tie off, and weave in the ends.
