When it comes to jig fishing, success is a matter of making the lure very alluring. This requires using a jig lure that fish can't resist. Though jig lures come in an array of monstrous shapes and sizes, it is often how they are used that can make the difference. It will never do to cast a jig lure far from the boat and reel it back in. That is a recipe for a very dull day of fishing indeed. What is needed is a quick hand and relatively shallow water.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Cast the jig in relatively shallow water, meaning anywhere from 4 to 10 feet.

  2. Step 2

Cast the jig lure down, in an angular fashion, near the edge of the boat. Never cast far from the boat.

  3. Step 3

You will be able to feel the bottom of the lake. Allow the jig to bob up and down amid the detritus of the lake bottom.

  4. Step 4

The key to jig fishing is constant, abrupt movement. This simulates a live lure, dancing about, which in turn invites fish to pounce.

  5. Step 5

If the boat drifts or moves, jerk the jig off the lake bottom and have it "swim" to your new location. Pulling the jig from the water ruins the attempt to make it seem like live bait.
