How to Buy Greek Gifts for New NPHC Sorority or Fraternity Member

Members of black Greek organizations, which are governed by the National Pan-Hellenic Association, are pretty picky about their symbols and colors. Someone buying a gift for a member has to be familiar with any official and unofficial mascots and symbols. Those items tend to show up on paddles, ceramics, clothing and many other items that aren't too hard to find in regular stores.

Instructions

1. Collect personalized information about the fraternity or sorority member, such as a line name, the number chapter of initiation, and any other personal information important to the recipient. This information can be used to personalize gifts such as jackets, T-shirts and novelties.

2. Stick to the organization's official colors. Many stores sell the symbols of the organization in a variety of prints such as plaid and paisley. These are not acceptable methods of displaying symbols. All of the Black Greek "Divine Nine" organizations have two basic colors. For example, purple and gold represents Omega Psi Phi;. Black and old gold stands for Alpha Phi Alpha and royal blue and pure white is always for Zeta Phi Beta. Find out what the official color is for that member's organization before you buy anything for a new member.

3. Wooden paddles and other wood gifts like plaques, clocks and organization crests are common gifts for any Greek organization. The NPHC members are no different.

4. Offer to pay the member's dues for a year. This can also apply for older new members that join alumni organizations.

5. Find out what community activities the organization plans to do that year. Consider a gift that will help the member fulfill that mission.
