Instructions

    • 1

You will need to find a local BMV to pass a written and standard vision test. Indiana BMV are closed on Mondays, so plan ahead.

    • 2

You will have to turn in your current license from your previous home state when you take the Indiana tests at the BMV.

    • 3

If your current license has been expired, you will still be able to transfer to an Indiana license as stated in the steps above. If your license has been expired for more than three years, however, you will also have to take a scheduled driving test. Be sure to schedule this driving test in advance.

If you are attempting to get your Indiana license, and your current license is expired or you do not have it any longer (valid, but lost or misplaced) than you will have to get a copy of your driving record from your previous home state and bring that copy with you to the Indiana BMV the day you take your tests. If you fail to do this, they may only issue a drivers permit, which does not allow you to have full driver privileges.

If you have any outstanding fines or tickets in your previous home state, you will more than likely have to take care of them prior to getting your license in Indiana. The BMV can communicate and will run a check on your old license. If you owe money, your previous state can place a block that prevents you from obtaining your new license until all fines are paid.

When you provide the Indiana BMV with proof of residence, they will want to see a bill, voter registration card and/or paystub with your current Indiana address. If you bring in a printed copy of a paystub, they may refuse it. If you bring in mail with the current address, but it is not a Nipsco bill, phone bill or some other utility bill, they may refuse it. Indiana BMV has stated "they prefer" utility bills and actual paystubs. (This may be difficult since most employers do everything over the internet now). Best bet is a utility bill with your current address. This will avoid any hassle.

Once you pass the written test, vision screening and provide sufficient documentation named above, you will have your picture taken. They no longer allow you to wear glasses or smile showing your teeth for your license photo.

An Indiana license is valid for six years. You can renew your license up to one year prior to expiration.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be prepared. Put all necessary documents in an envelope to avoid leaving something behind. The lines at a BMV can be lengthy. Having to leave and then return can be very frustrating.

  • It is a good idea to get a state ID card while you are there to get your license. The least amount of trips to the BMV you have to make, the better.

  • If you have a special circumstance; license revoked, license expired for more than three years, under the age of 18... you will want to contact the BMV in advance to ensure you understand what will be required.
