Remove Wallpaper from A Wall

If you plan to remodel a room with old wallpaper you need to know how to remove wallpaper from a wall. This can seem difficult, but with the right method it is not.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wheeled scoring tool
  • Scrapper
  • Wallpaper remover gel
  • Rags
  • Drop cloth
  1. Step 1

Go to the breaker and turn off electricity to the room so you dont shock yourself when you remover the wallpaper. Also unscrew any electrical plate covers and cover the openings with tape.

  2. Step 2

Place drop cloths or tarps to protect the floor.

  3. Step 3

Purchase or borrow a wheeled scoring tool. Use it to make thousands of little cuts allover the wall you plan to remove wallpaper from. This is particularly important for vinyl based wallpapers.

  4. Step 4

Get a gel type wallpaper remover, and apply it with a sponge from the bottom of the wall up. Do about 5-6 feet of the walls width at a time.

  5. Step 5

Follow the timing directions on your can of wallpaper remover to know how long to leave the chemicals on the wallpaper. When the time comes remove the wallpaper from the wall with a scrapper. Repeat steps 3-5 on areas that don't remove easily.

  6. Step 6

Once you remove the wallpaper from a wall, and while the glue is soft wash the wall with a rag and warm water. Dry immediately afterward.

on 6/5/2009 Great tips. We found that spraying a vinegar and water mixture worked well for removing wallpaper.
