How to cover a tattoo using Dermacolor Camouflage makeup

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Necessary =
  • Dermacolor Minipalette
  • Dermacolor Fixing Powder
  • Recommended =
  • Applicator Sponge
  • No 10 Rounded Makeup Brush
  • Small powder puff
  1. Step 1

    Colour match
Before attempting to cover a tattoo we recommend that you do a colour match to obtain an indication of your correct skin tone colour.

Make sure that you are in a room with lots of natural light or even in the open air, with good daylight. (Artificial light with give a false impression).
Select a colour from the Minipalette that you think most resembles your skin tone, warm this up with a brush or your finger first and then apply it to the skin in the area near to the tattoo. Depending how this looks you can then add more shades, for example those with more pink or yellow tints. Do this a little bit at a time and try to remember or record what shades you are adding (They are all numbered). If your mix becomes too extensive or confusing then consider starting over. The camouflage cream will stay malleable until you apply the fixing powder so there is no time limit. When you think you have the mix right, have another practise to see if you can reproduce it.

  2. Step 2

    Correcting the tattoo
Once you have an idea of you skin tone its time to consider trying to cover the tattoo. The first step is to clean the area making sure there are no moisturisers of soaps left on the skin as this can destabilize the camouflage cream.
In your Minipalette will be the most common correcting colour (D32). When applied to the tattoo this will correct the dark colours to a more neutral colour. Apply the D32 colour, with a small makeup brush or sponge and literally paint over the lines or filled areas of the tattoo. Once you have sufficiently covered the tattoo the correcting colour should then be fixed.

  3. Step 3

    Fixing the cream
Very generously apply the fixing powder to the camouflage cream using a powder puff. Wait 5-10 minutes for this to dry and set, then brush off any excess. If you discover you have missed an area you can go over this with the correcting colour and reapply the fixing powder again. Once you are satisfied the tattoo is sufficiently covered you can then apply the skin tone colour.

  4. Step 4

    Applying the skin tone colour(s)
Having done a colour match (Step 1) you would have had a bit of practise and have an idea of what colours you need to match your skin tone. Apply the required colours on top of the correcting colour, using a makeup brush or sponge. Use a stippling action as continuous rubbing or dragging can disturb the correcting colours underneath. Please remember that your colour may vary slightly when applied in conjunction with the correcting colour underneath, so be prepared for this.
Cover the tattoo with your skin tone colour until about 2cm past the edge of the tattoo area, after this 2cm begin to fade away the colours into the surrounding skin. Once you are satisfied with the colour and the coverage, fix the cream once again as explained in step 3, ensuring you cover the whole area where the camouflage cream has now been applied.

  5. Step 5

    Finishing Touches
Remember that skin is rarely flawless or a consistent colour, so for greater authenticity consider matching the cover to the surrounding skin. Items such as freckles or other characteristics can be replicated with the use of a fine brush. If this is attempted remember to fix the camouflage cream once again. When you have finished you can lightly mist the area with mineral water to soften the effects of the remaining powder. For extra fixing power, especially for areas such as the neck, arms, legs and body, consider using Dermacolor Fixing Spray.

  6. Step 6

    Additional Makeup or Touching Up
Additional dry make-up can be applied on top of the camouflage cream if required. Touching up should not be necessary however tattoos can be very difficult to cover and in areas prone to rubbing it is possible that the tattoo may start to appear through the camouflage cream. If covering for a wedding or special occasion we therefore recommend you apply the camouflage as late as possible.

  7. Step 7

    Removal
For effective removal of the camouflage cream we recommend you use Dermacolor Cleansing Cream, or in the case of very sensitive skin, Dermacolor Cleansing Milk. Apply gently onto the covered area, until the camouflage is gently lifted from the skin. Remove with a warm, damp cloth or damp cotton pads. A second application of cream or milk may be required.
