Watermelon is one of my favorite foods. There is nothing better than eating watermelon on a hot summer day. Watermelons are good for potassium and have low levels of sodium. Watermelon is actually a vegetable. They are fat free and high in vitamin C. The first recorded watermelon was 5,000 years ago in Egypt. Here are some watermelon tips.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When buying cut watermelon, look for flesh that is moist and tight.

  2. Step 2

When buying whole watermelon, check the underbelly. If it has a pale yellow color then the watermelon should be ripe. If the watermelon is white, then the watermelon was picked too soon. If the watermelon has a shriveled stem, it means it is ripe. If you thump the watermelon, the sound should be hollow.

  3. Step 3

Store the whole watermelon at room temperature. If you cut sections, it can be wrapped and stored in the refrigerator. Watermelons can be kept uncut at room temperature for about 2 weeks.

  4. Step 4

After serving the watermelon, you can save and pickle the rind. You can seed and puree watermelon to make Sherbet. You can also puree seeded watermelon with other fruits. Cut some up in chunks for a quick snack.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you store the whole watermelon at room temperature and sliced watermelon in the refrigerator. Watermelon is good in smoothies as well.

on 5/13/2009 I love watermelon. I usually take it directly to the fridge, but it makes more sense to store it at room temperature for up to two weeks. Thanks for the great tips.
