How to Clean Tanzanite Jewelry
Tanzanite is a rare gemstone that is lovely, valuable -- and delicate. Cleaning tanzanite jewelry isn't difficult, but it requires great care to avoid damaging the stone. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Plastic container
- Distilled water at room temperature
- Mild dishwashing liquid
- Soft-bristled toothbrush
- Soft cloth

Fill a plastic container with distilled water at room temperature. Water that is either too hot or too cold can cause tanzanite to crack. Avoid tap water, which can leave residue on the stone.

Add a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid to the water. Carefully place the jewelry in the water; don't let the stone bump the bottom or sides of the container. Let the jewelry soak for 10 to 20 minutes.

Dip a soft-bristled toothbrush into the soapy water and scrub the stone gently. Use the softest toothbrush available to avoid scratching the stone while removing residue. Wash the rest of the jewelry piece with the soapy water as well.

Rinse the piece of jewelry with clean distilled water at room temperature. Dry the piece carefully with a soft cloth.

Tips & Warnings
Tanzanite scratches easily. Store pieces of tanzanite jewelry in individual cloth bags so the stones don't knock against each other or other jewelry.
Save tanzanite jewelry for wearing occasions that won't involve bumping or scratching the stone. Wearing tanzanite jewelry while cleaning, gardening or playing sports could result in damage.
Never clean tanzanite in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
Avoid exposing tanzanite to extreme changes in temperature. Thermal shock can cause tanzanite to crack.
