Step 1
Decide what you want BEFORE the negotiating begins. What is your win condition? If your asking for $50,000, Will you accept $49,900? Define what you will and won't do before you begin the negotiating process.
-
Step 2
Ask for more than you really want. If you ask for $50,000, AND a company car, AND more vacation days, then you can give up the car and vacation days and keep the $50,000. Which is what you wanted in the first place.
-
Step 3
Before closing the negotiation, always say you have to run the final proposal by someone else. This could be your wife, boss, board of advisors, oe attorney. It doesn't really matter, all thats important is that you take away the other parties ability to pressure you during the negotiating process. you can always say, "this offer sounds pretty good, but I'm going to have to run it by my wife first"
-
Step 4
Don't gloat or brag after the negotiation is over, and the deal is made. Don't say how much money you saved, or how much more money you could have spent. Be a gentleman, and thank the other party for doing business with you.
