How to Set a Pendulum Clock

Pendulum clocks used to be viewed as accurate timepieces, and indeed they were before modern electrical clocks came on the scene. Today, however, pendulum clocks still command respect due to their formal appearance and value as antiques. Unlike modern clocks, special care is required to set a pendulum clock in motion at the correct time. As is true of all mechanical clocks, pendulum clocks contain delicate machinery and must be handled carefully at all times.

Instructions

1. Set the hands to the proper time. To do this, move the minute hand of the clock gently and slowly toward the proper time. Never move the second or hour hand on a mechanical clock. In fact, if the time on the clock is off by more than an hour, keep the clock stopped until the time catches up with the clock, and then restart it.

2. Start the clock by gently moving the pendulum about a centimeter to the right and letting it go. It should swing back and forth, and you should be able to hear a ticking sound. If you cannot hear any ticking, move the pendulum a bit more to the right before releasing it. Do not move the pendulum too far, or you will risk damaging the mechanisms inside the clock.

3. Regulate the pendulum clock if necessary. After the clock has been ticking for two to three days, check to see if the time is accurate. If it is not, regulate the clock by turning the key or the rating nut that adjusts the height of the pendulum. A shorter pendulum will swing more slowly, while a longer pendulum will swing more quickly. Adjust the clock, checking every few days to ensure time accuracy.
